Dripping Springs, Texas — As part of the 2017 Texas Auto Writers Association Texas Truck Rodeo, Alfa Romeo brought their latest Stelvio product to Texas to compete for the Crossover Utility Vehicle of Texas. As it turns out, it won. While there, we had a chance to take it out on the street and see what makes the little Italian special.
For starters, it’s based on the Giulia platform. That means it feels like a Giulia inside. It also means it drives like a raised Giulia. We’re fans of the Giulia, especially in bonkers Quadrifoglio trim.
The Ti Sport trim is basically the Quadrifoglio inside, with the same seats, same trim pieces, and even the same amazing paddle shifters that are mounted to the steering column — as God intended — and are seemingly ripped straight from the Ferrari parts catalog.
Acceleration is brisk, and shifts are quick thanks to the ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic. While 140 milliseconds isn’t the fastest shifting transmission out there, it’s still fast enough. The 2-3 shift is especially enjoyable.
Beyond that there’s not much we can say about the Stelvio because our time with it was so short. But if you’re looking for a Giulia with some extra ride height, it looks like the Stelvio could be the winner.
We’ll be able to share more when we get it
