How to get those headlights clear again

LifeHack_Headlights_02

IRVINE, Calif. (2018) – We’ve all seen those cars in the parking lot that are just a few years old but have headlights that are cloudy and yellow. It can make a relatively new car look much older than it really is. Not only is having cloudy, yellow lights unsightly, but it’s also a safety issue limiting your visibility when night driving. So, what do you do? Replacing the headlights can expensive and depending on the car they can sometimes be hard to find also. Fortunately, Meguiar’s, the trusted car care experts since 1901, has several solutions to get those headlights clear again depending on weather you want to work by hand or use a corded drill, and how badly oxidized and yellowed your headlights are.

If you have headlights with light oxidation or yellowing and you want to work by hand Meguiar’s® Basic Headlight Restoration Kit is the ideal choice. With this kit it’s recommended to mask off around the headlights and soak the included pads in water for a minute. Then, you lightly sand with each of the four different pads working from coarser to finer. After, you follow with the included Meguiar’s® PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish by working it in for 1-2 minutes and wiping off with a premium microfiber towel. This is repeated multiple times on each headlight until they are clear again.

If you want to work by hand and have headlights with moderate yellowing or cloudiness you would want to go with Meguiar’s® Two Step Headlight Restoration Kit. With this kit you mask off around the headlights and apply the Step 1 Cleaning Solution with the grey cleaning pad until the headlight has a uniform frosted appearance. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Then, apply a medium coat of the included aerosol Step 2 Headlight Coating, overlapping your passes by 50%. Allow to cure and apply a second coat. This kit is extremely easy to use and delivers great results.

Then, if your headlights have heavy oxidation, and you have a corded drill, you should consider Meguiar’s® Heavy Duty Headlight Restoration Kit. With this kit you clean the lights thoroughly and then mask off around each light. Lightly sand with the two different grades of fine sandpaper and water. Work the first disc horizontally and the second vertically, making sure they have a uniform frosted appearance before following with the Meguiar’s® PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish. Here you apply the PlastX to the included wool buff pad using a standard corded drill to polish the plastic back up to clarity. Work for 1-2 minutes wiping off the residue before it dries, then repeat this process if needed until the lenses look like new again. Clean with a good glass cleaner and apply a medium coat of the included Headlight Coating overlapping your passes by 50%. Allow to cure and apply a second coat for a thorough seal.

Maybe you just purchased a car and the headlights are already crystal clear. If so, we have a great new product called Meguiar’s® Keep Clear Headlight Coating that comes in a spray aerosol that keeps headlights clear, offers UV protection, and maintains the clarity for up to one year. With this protective coating you want to clean the headlights with a glass cleaner and a microfiber towel and mask thoroughly around each headlight so you don’t get overspray on the surrounding surfaces. Spray a medium coat, let cure 3-5 minutes and spray a second medium coat and you’re done! It’s definitely a must-have to maintain clarity and protect your headlights from that ugly clouding, yellowing, or hazing, and instead keep them looking like new.

So, no matter yellow or cloudy your headlights are, or if you want to work by hand or machine, Meguiar’s has a solution for you to get those yellow headlights clear again and keep them that way!
