I’m tired of reading about the next “Tesla killer.” Just like I’m tired of reading about “iPhone killers.” Until the product is on sale to where I can use it and evaluate it, it’s not a killer anything. It’s like all the Kickstarter ads I keep seeing on Facebook. The majority of those products never see the light of day.
Lucid Motors just introduced a car that’s going to go on sale in 2018. It’s a fully-electric luxury car with performance that’ll rival — and beat — the Tesla Model S.
Will it? Anything can beat anything on paper if you write it.
According to Lucid Motors, the 1,000 horsepower Air will accelerate from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and travel 400 miles on a single charge.
Of course, like Kickstarter, they’re already taking deposits. They’re fully refundable, of course. But they’re expecting to sell the first batch of cars for around $100,000. A more-affordable $65,000 version will follow.
It’s a good looking car, and if they can meet these targets they might have a real winner on their hands. But I’m not seeing how a company can build a factory and a car that is better than the Model S in the timeframe allowed.
Lucid Motors, feel free to prove me wrong.
